Grandpa Nielson

Richard Jay Nielson

March 26, 1922 ~ July 21, 2010

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Richard Jay Nielson, passed away July 21, 2010 from natural causes incidental to age.
Richard was born in Leamington, Utah, March 26, 1922 to Spencer Jay Nielson and Bessie Mae Greathouse Nielson. He attended schools in Leamington and Delta serving as the Student Body President of Delta High School in his senior year. He attended Utah State University where he met Norma Ralphs and they were married in the Logan Temple, June 23, 1942. They had four daughters: DeeAnn (Alan) Seelos, Karla Jean (Phil) Christensen, Julie Marie (Mark) Chase, and Lori Sue (Craig) Sorensen.
Richard loved prospecting and through his hobby found several mineral properties. He served for several years as the town Marshal and Mayor, as well as, Water Master for the Central Utah Water Co. His main occupation was farming and raising cattle.
He was a member of the LDS Church and served in many positions including Bishop of the Leamington Ward. He loved his family, friends and neighbors; deer hunting; the outdoors; chocolate; and Leamington. He always liked to share the story that he rode the first bucking bronco at the first Leamarado Rodeo in 1946. He had a great sense of humor and a positive outlook that he instilled in his children and grandchildren. His family will miss him greatly.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years and his four daughters and sons-in-law. He also has 15 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren with 3 more expected.

We loved grandpa so much and will miss him dearly. We always had so much fun with him and he was such a good friend! Everytime he saw me he would always say how nice it was to have a granddaughter that he could look up to! (because I was taller than him). He made all of us feel so special and loved.
